Jurassic insect wore eggs on its legs. Researchers analyzed roughly 160 fossils of Karataviella popovi. Roughly 163.5 million years old.

This is probably a first for this food. Just fed some pink glow designer pineapple to my hissing cockroaches. They are ignoring it. Ha!

I found this article fascinating. Who knew that you could find well preserved beetles inside wood submerged in a peat bog.

Fun fact on this cold December morning - there is only one endemic species of insect in Antarctica. Belgica antarctica Jacobs, 1900 (the Antarctic midge). It also has one of the smallest known insect genomes (at roughly 13,500 genes). It is flightless as an adult. Appaently, it also requires a freezing climate to survive.

This was definitely news to me. The elaborate structures on treehoppers (Membracidae) use wing genes to grow. More details in this article at smithsonianmag.com. I have always been fascinated by these tiny creatures and their elaborate skeletal structures.

Just finished reading “Dance of the Dung Beetles.” Learned that one species, Thorectes lusitanicus, eats acorns (it is found in Mediterranean oak forests).
